Breaking: Obama Administration Pulls Out

The word’s out — the United States is withdrawing from the Durban Review process. It’s not coming back unless a completely clean text miraculously surfaces — no singling out Israel, no ‘defamation of religion.’ AJC welcomes the move.

New Draft Outcome Document

The latest draft of the Durban II outcome document is out. AJC’s UN Watch has it here (PDF). Absolutely worth reading.

If language is in brackets, someone’s objected, and it’s subject to further negotiation. The material on the Holocaust is in brackets. Need we say more?

“We choose to work with our government to assess whether Durban is beyond salvaging.” Makes sense — unless you’re one of those who won’t give the Obama Administration a chance. So says David Harris in a letter to the Jerusalem Post, laying out AJC’s position. It’s a response to an attack piece by JPost columnist Caroline Glick.

Today’s Washington Post reports that the U.S. delegation to the Durban talks is ” pressing foreign governments … to desist from singling out Israel for criticism.” AJC’s Felice Gaer is one of two American reps there. Worth reading the whole article.

Breaking: U.S. Delegation to Durban Prep

Found out tonight that the U.S. will send a delegation to Geneva to participate in preparations for Durban II on an exploratory basis. The U.S. wants to see if the process can be salvaged — meaning that all specific references to Israel are eliminated from the draft outcome document. Susan Rice, U.S. Ambassador to the UN, has asked AJC’s Felice Gaer to co-chair the delegation.
